What businesses can learn from Patagonia

In 1991, Yvon Chouinard, founder of the well-known sports brand Patagonia, was facing a huge challenge. Patagonia was simply growing too fast.
Chouinard's response would become a template for purpose-driven leadership: slow down on purpose, audit the supply chain, fund environmental causes structurally, and refuse to chase growth that breaks the values of the company.
Three lessons that still apply today:
-
Profit is a means, not the end. Patagonia uses profit to fund the mission, not the other way around.
-
Transparency is a competitive advantage. Honest reporting on what's not working builds long-term trust.
-
The best marketing is doing the work. Patagonia's brand is the by-product of its choices, not its campaigns.
What would your company do differently if growth wasn't the primary metric?
